Hypersonic Flows About a 25° Sharp Cone
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents the results of a numerical study that examines the surface heating discrepancies observed between computed and measured values along a sharp cone. With Mach numbers of an order of 10 and the free-stream length Reynolds number of an order of 10 000, the present computations have been made with the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method by using the G2 code of Bird. The ow conditions are those speci ed for two experiments conducted in the Veridian 48-inch Hypersonic Shock Tunnel. Axisymmetric simulations are made since the test model was assumed to be at zero incidence. Details of the current calculations are presented, along with comparisons between the experimental data, for surface heating and pressure distributions. Results of the comparisons show major di erences in measured and calculated results for heating distributions, with di erences in excess of 25 percent for the two cases examined.

Predicting continuum breakdown in hypersonic viscous flows
This paper presents a study of the breakdown of the Navier–Stokes equations in hypersonic viscous flows over a sharp cone tip and a hollow cylinder/flare geometry. Investigations are performed through detailed comparisons of the numerical results obtained with continuum and particle techniques. The objective of the study is to predict conditions under which the continuum approach may be expecte...
متن کاملAnalytic Solution for Hypersonic Flow Past a Slender Elliptic Cone Using Second-Order Perturbation Approximations
An approximate analytical solution is obtained for hypersonic flow past a slender elliptic cone using second-order perturbation techniques in spherical coordinate systems. The analysis is based on perturbations of hypersonic flow past a circular cone aligned with the free stream, the perturbations stemming from the small cross-section eccentricity. By means of hypersonic approximations for the ...
متن کاملCFD Validation for Hypersonic Flight: Real Gas Flows
The aerodynamics of future hypersonic air-breathing vehicles will be greatly affected by high-enthalpy or “real gas” effects. It is the purpose of a recent NATO Research and Technology Organization study to assess the readiness of computational fluid dynamics to simulate high-enthalpy flows. This paper summarizes the results of this effort through the discussion of four test cases: a transverse...
متن کاملHypersonic Laminar Instability on Round Cones Near Zero Angle of Attack
Reliable predictions for hypersonic laminarturbulent transition will have to be based on simulation of the transition mechanisms. Accurate simulation of the second-mode instability-wave growth on a round cone at zero angle of attack would be a significant step toward this goal. Hypersonic stability experiments in this geometry are reviewed, and three are selected. Extensive and previously unpub...
